Slightly more vigorous than aromatherapy massage, Swedish massage is the classic European massage and arguably the most well-known.*
It involves the use of hands, forearms or elbows to manipulate the superficial layers of your muscles to improve mental and physical health. Your muscles will be manipulated with a variety of strokes: long, firm strokes, kneading strokes and pummelling movements (far more pleasant than it sounds!). A skin-nourishing massage oil or lotion is usually used to lessen friction. Active or passive movement of the joints may also be part of the massage.
Swedish massage can help your body remove toxins, deliver nutrients to tissues and cells more efficiently, and recover from strains and trauma more quickly. It is used to stimulate circulation, ease muscle tension, improve flexibility and promote relaxation which, in turn so enables your body to release its own natural painkillers. As a result, muscles begin to loosen and your nerves are calmed.
*Please note: this form of massage does NOT involve me wearing blonde plaits!
